A spectacular horizontal narrative scroll that perfectly maps the epic biography of Lord Krishna. The central midnight-black medallion depicts Radha and Krishna flanked by panels of adoring Gopis. The true genius of the piece lies in its border of 18 crimson medallions, which visually narrate the entire story of Krishna's life from his very birth—including his miraculous midnight birth in the prison of Mathura, Vasudeva crossing the Yamuna with the baby, his upbringing in Gokul, the subduing of Kaliya Naag, the lifting of Mount Govardhan, and his ultimate victory over King Kansa. Hand-painted with masterful precision by Odisha's traditional artisans.

The Timeless Scroll Painting Tradition

Pattachitra

Pattachitra is one of India’s oldest and most vibrant scroll painting traditions, deeply rooted in the cultural and religious fabric of Odisha. Originating in the 12th century around the cult of Lord Jagannath, this art form is traditionally executed by hereditary artists known as Chitrakars.

Every painting is created on a handmade canvas made of layered cotton cloth treated with tamarind paste and chalk powder. Artists strictly use natural pigments sourced from stones, conch shells, and plants to depict intricate stories from Hindu mythology and folklore. Characterized by its sharp, freehand outlines, expressive features, and rich decorative borders, Pattachitra beautifully bridges the gap between sacred devotion and master craftsmanship.
